The Truth About Facebook Status Updates

This is an interactive chart I made to describe the difference between what is posted and what I find true re: Facebook status updates.  Its a combination of what I have found true from my Facebook experience, and what I have generalized through others.  It pretty much speaks for itself, so I won’t ramble on.

For full interaction, scroll over the buttons at the bottom, and don’t forget to click over the tabs at the top to see Relationship Status Chart and the Status Update chart.  Enjoy.

Excellent post! One suggestion: define the categories since we all seem to have our own interpretation of them. Also, I don’t think facebook needs to have a customized option for the relationship status. They just need to add one more category: casually dating. Besides if they did offer a customized option for the relationship status then you wouldn’t be able to make your pretty charts.

  2. Good idea, Kelly. Here’s what I was working off of:

Single – No serious ties to any one person. Any dates you have are one-offs or two-offs, and things are not serious on any front.

In A Relationship – Strong connection to one person. There won’t be any tagged pics of you and a competitor without questions being asked.

It’s Complicated – There may or may not be one person technically at the top of the mountain, but there are others climbing higher each day. The bonds created are less casual – multiple serious relationship contenders present. They are aware of the competition, but they feel the game isn’t over until there are rings on fingers.

Open Relationship – You have found a partner but you both see other people. Everyone knows that the two of you are tied together, but they also know that a good night can be had with you when the other person isn’t present.

Engaged – Wedding planning. Engagement ring accepted. Some outsiders see it as final, while the aggressive competitors see it as a time limit to their poaching.

Married – Rings exchanged. Game over. Intoxicated pictures tagged drop by almost 65%.

I like your idea about the option of Casually Dating – that would work wonderfully. Its the perfect shade between Single and Complicated, because not everyone is absurd enough to let things get so complicated. I know that most people are somewhere between Single and Complicated, but since Single is far more definable, I’m forced to round up and say that everyone’s Complicated.

Its like being guilty until proven innocent.
